2018 WCCA Swimming Championships

Hempfield, Mt. Pleasant, Penn-Trafford, Belle Vernon Win Team Trophys at WCCA Swimming and Diving Championships

Seventeen Westmoreland County high schools competed in the 2018 Westmoreland County Coaches Association Swimming and Diving Championships on January 26-27 at the Derry Area High School Natatorium. Medals were awarded to individuals in 24 events, with trophies presented to the top girls and boys teams in two divisions. For the girls events, Hempfield was awarded the Class AAA trophy with Mt. Pleasant winning in Class AA. Boys team trophies went to Penn-Trafford in Class AAA and Belle Vernon in Class AA. 

Four new event records were set during this year's meet. 

• Heather Gardner of Mt. Pleasant set the new Girls 50 Freestyle record at 23.38
• Ian Shahan of Belle Vernon set the new Boys 100 Backstroke record at 53.12
• Heather Gardner of Mt. Pleasant set the new Girls 100 Breaststroke record at 105.57
• The Hempfield team of G. Mayo, T. Wilson, B. Wilson, and A. Toth set the new Boys 200 Freestyle Relay record at 1:29.01

Teams participating in this year's meet were Belle Vernon, Burrell, Derry Area, Franklin Regional, Greater Latrobe, Greensburg Salem, Hempfield Area, Jeannette, Kiski Area, Kiski School, Ligonier Valley, Mt. Pleasant, Norwin, Penn-Trafford, Southmoreland, Valley, and Yough.
