Franklin Regional, Greater Latrobe, and Mount Pleasant Claim Top Team Trophies at WCCA Swim Championships
The Franklin Regional and Mount Pleasant boys kept their multi-year winning streaks alive as their teams finished on top at the annual Westmoreland County Coaches Association Swimming Championship meet on Saturday, January 24, at Derry Area High School. Franklin Regional won their sixth Class 3A boys title in a row, while the Vikings claimed their third straight in Class 2A. The Greater Latrobe girls defended their 3A girls team championship from 2025, and Franklin Regional's girls knocked Mt Pleasant off their long-time perch at the top of 2A.
New meet records were established in a pair of individual events. Greater Latrobe's Chris Heese swam a 1:54.34 in the Boys 200 IM, besting the previous mark of 1:54.48 by Franklin Regional's Aiden Bunker in 2023. Franklin Regional's Thomas Westerman, runner-up last year in the Boys 500 Yard Freestyle, moved up to the gold medal with a record-breaking 4:38.72, eclipsing the 4:39.24 mark set by David Mutter of Mount Pleasant in 2024.
Franklin Regional dominated the top step of the medal stand, earning 13 gold medals out of 22 swimming events, including 5 of 6 relay events. Greater Latrobe blocked Franklin Regional from a sweep of the relays by edging out the Panthers for the top spot in the Boys 200 Free Relay.
Diving events were contested on Friday, January 23, and are recapped in the post here:
