Greensburg Central Catholic Boys Soccer earns a 2-1 victory over Serra Catholic in double overtime

Greensburg Central Catholic junior midfielder Nate Ward scored a goal at the end of the second overtime period on an assist from senior forward Luke Mort to propel the Centurions past the Serra Catholic Eagles. The WPIAL Class 1A Section 2 boys soccer game was played at Dick’s Sporting Goods Field at Seton Hill University on a chilly Saturday afternoon.

Serra Catholic sophomore Joey Folino got things started when he scored on Centurion junior goal keeper Patrick Brewer in the first period of play. Later in the first period, Greensburg Central Catholic senior midfielder Sean Gargan beat Serra Catholic junior goal keeper Teddy Almeter scoring on his own free kick and the score was tied at 1-1.

Both teams played stellar defense with no other scoring taking place in the first period.  Both goal tenders held the opposing team scoreless in the 40-minute second period, and regulation play ended with the two teams tied at one.

Serra Head Coach Chad Bruns and GCC Head Coach Tyler Solis met with the officials and agreed to play two five-minute overtime periods.

The first overtime ended without any score. The second overtime period was nearly complete when Ward scored the winning goal to keep the Centurions undefeated in WPIAL play this year. Their record improved to 12-0 in conference play and 13-1 overall. Serra’s conference record fell to 6-5 and 9-5 overall.
