2018 WCCA Cross Country Championships

Greensburg Salem's Cameron Binda and GCC's Corinn Brewer Take Individual Gold at WCCA Cross Country Championships 

Greensburg Salem's Cameron Binda shaved 26 seconds off his 2017 championship time, outpacing the field by over half a minute to finish in 16:28.1 and repeat as boys champion in the Westmoreland County Coaches Association Cross Country Championship at the Westmoreland County Community College course in Youngwood. Greensburg Salem teammates Dylan Binda and Mark Brown were next to break the tape, swapping their 2017 finish places as the trio of Golden Lions once again swept the top three spots. Hempfield's Logan Ali grabbed fourth ahead of another Golden Lion runner, Mason Jobe, who finished fifth. The rest of the top ten were Dominic Spatolisano and Eli Olson of Norwin, Ethan Kelley of Greensburg Salem, Trevor Verkleeren of Hempfield, and Penn-Trafford's Patrick Driscoll.  

In the girls event, Greensburg Central Catholic's Corinn Brewer finished in 19:31.5, beating Kiski Area's Kierra Shreffler's time of 19:50.8. The top pair were the only girls finishing under 20 minutes and both beat last years winning time of 20:20.8. Third place went to Norwin's Courtney Kosanovic with Latrobe's Lexi Planinsek fourth and Norwin's Triniti Joy fifth. The rest of the top ten were Lily Schmadel of Hempfield, Latrobe's Rachel Harter and McKenna Skatell, Norwin's Madison Pesi, and Mary Trinclisti of Derry Area in tenth.

In the Junior Varsity race, Greensburg Salem's Tyler Vandenberg, Norwin's John Dodaro, and Kiski Area's Logan Kelly were the top three boys finishers. Greensburg Salem's Joula Anderson, Norwin's Alexandra Walton, and Greensburg Salem's Brenna Slezak were the top finishing JV girls.   

The team championships in the large school category were won by the Norwin in both boys and girls. Likewise, Greensburg Salem swept the boys and girls team titles in the smaller schools category. 

Former Greensburg Salem distance runner and 2018 Pittsburgh Great Race ladies winner Samantha Bower was on hand to present the medals and trophies. The WCCC course was in a new configuration from last year due to construction on campus. Rain overnight and earlier in the day made for a wet course, but the event was run under dry but cloudy skies.
