Latrobe boys lacrosse overcomes slow start for 16-13 senior night win over Hempfield

Perhaps it was the aura of Senior Night at Latrobe's Rossi Field that temporarily distracted the Wildcats' boys lacrosse team, but they didn't stay distracted for long. Latrobe watched Hempfield open up a 4-1 lead in the first 7 minutes of the game, then answered the bell with 10 of the next 11 goals on their way to beating Hempfield 16-13 in front of a good crowd on a warm Senior Night in Latrobe. 

Finding themselves down by three after the Spartans scored to make it 4-1 with 5:07 remaining in the first period, the Wildcats scored 8 unanswered goals over the next 16 minutes, keeping the Spartans off the scoreboard until Luke Fichner got one back with only 40.8 seconds remaining in the first half to give the Cats a 9-5 lead at intermission. The third period opened with both teams trading pairs of goals as Latrobe scored two, followed by the Spartans with two, then two more for Latrobe, before Hempfield went on a 5-goal run to trail 13-12 with 10:01 remaining in regulation play. But Latrobe found another gear, winding 8 minutes from the clock while scoring 3 more goals to build a 16-12 lead with 1:43 left on the clock. Hempfield's Luke Weir, who scored the first goal of the game, added the last one with 15.8 seconds to go, and the Wildcats picked up the win with the final score of 16-13.  

Latrobe senior Marco Cuda led the Wilcats with 6 goals, followed by Colvin Stallings with 4. Vincent Stallings and Matt Bobula each added a pair to the scoresheet, while Luke Stein and Paxton Knupp chipped in with single goals for Latrobe. Hempfield was led by senior Luke Weir's 6 goal night, followed by Domenic DeRiso with 4. Luke Fichner had two goals for the Spartans and Jack Soles was good for one. Paul Solomon notched the win in goal for Latrobe.
