Latrobe Boys Drop Home Opener 62-59 to Pittsburgh Central Catholic

A cold shooting second quarter put Latrobe's boys in a hole that they battled hard to climb out of, but their late comeback effort fell short, and visiting Pittsburgh Central Catholic notched a 62-59 non-conference victory to spoil the Wildcats' home opener on February 12.

Latrobe opened with a strong effort and led the Vikings 17-11 after one quarter of play. Central stormed back with a vengeance in the second, with their 19-5 scoring margin giving them a 30-22 lead at the half.

The Wildcats closed on the Vikings to open the second half, with Mike Noonan racking up a dozen of Latrobe's 20 third quarter points, and they only trailed 45-42 heading for the final frame.

A Drew Clair layup with 4:12 left to play put the Wildcats on top 55-54, but Central went back in front 57-55 with just under 3 minutes to play. A steal and score added two more for the Vikings, and they held a 5 point lead with 2:06 remaining.

A Frankie Newill 3-pointer for Latrobe closed the gap to 60-58 inside the 2 minute mark, and Landon Butler added a late-game free throw, but a pair of Ben Sarson free throws clinched the 3-point victory margin for Central Catholic.

Sarson led the Vikings with 21 points, and Collin O'Toole and Anderson Cyaker added 10 each. Mike Noonan topped Latrobe with 19, as Ryan Sickenberger chipped in 16 and Drew Clair added 10.

Pittsburgh Central Catholic improves to 3-1 heading into their first conference game with North Hills next week. Latrobe drops to 1-3 and faces Greensburg Salem in the non-conference WCCA Showcase event on Saturday.
