Third Quarter Surge Powers Norwin's 54-43 Win over Jeannette Boys

Norwin used a 2-for-1 third quarter scoring advantage, overcoming a 2-point halftime deficit, enroute to beating Jeannette 54-43 on Tuesday, December 17. The game was played as the first of a pair of Knights' home openers, with the girls team hosting North Hills in the game that followed. It was also new Norwin head coach Buddy Valinsky's first game at the helm in front of the home crowd.

Jeannette, who has played a tough non-conference schedule against mostly larger schools to open the season, gave the Knights a battle early on. The Class 2A Jayhawks led the Class 6A Knights 12-9 after one quarter and 23-21 at halftime.

But Norwin's offense started to click in the third quarter, putting 20 points on the scoreboard while their defense held the Jayhawks to only 10. Jeannette held their own in the final frame, scoring 10 to the Knight's 13, but the damage done by the Knights in the third quarter was too much as Norwin remained undefeated with the 54-43 victory.

Norwin was led by long range bombers Ty Bilinsky with 17 points and Alex Gabauer with 12. Jeannette's Keith Rockmore had 14 points and Toby Cline finished with 11.

Norwin improves to 6-0 and hosts Hempfield on Friday in the annual rivalry of section foes. Jeannette falls to 1-6 on the season and opens section play on Friday at home, hosting Bentworth.
