Yough Girls Soccer Boots Southmoreland From Unbeaten Ranks With 2-1 Win

Southmoreland made the trip up the hill to Yough's Cougar Mountain Stadium sporting an 8-0-0 record. Two hours later their bus headed back to Alverton with their first loss of the season at the hands of their boundary neighbor.

A pair of first half Lady Cougar goals put Southmoreland in a hole, and Yough held off a late game attack to win 2-1 in a WPIAL Class 2A Section 3 matchup on Monday, October 5.

Yough's McKenzie Pritts broke the ice with a goal past Southmoreland goalkeeper Kaylee Keys with 31:34 to play in the opening half.

Pritts put the Cougars up by a deuce when she booted her second goal into the Scotties' net with 17:22 remaining in the half. 

The Lady Scotties got one back exactly 9 minutes into the second half when Tatum Lucero dropped a corner kick over Yough keeper Marin Sleith. 

Southmoreland had several offensive chances in the second half that went wide or high, yet the Scotties were the beneficiaries of good opportunities right up to the final horn. Tatum Lucero had three cracks at corner kicks within the final minute for Southmoreland, but the third one was successfully cleared to midfield by Yough as time expired, preserving the Lady Cougars upset victory. The win splits the season series between the teams as Southmoreland won 4-1 at home on September 17.

Both teams are back in action with section games on October 7. Southmoreland (8-1-0) hosts McGuffey while Yough (7-3-0) takes the long bus trip to Greene County to face Waynesburg Central.
