Latrobe Girls Deal Plum First Loss of Season, 1-0

Greater Latrobe girls soccer did something that no other team has accomplished this season; beating the Plum Lady Mustangs. It wasn't quick and it wasn't easy, but after 80 minutes of regulation and 5 minutes and two seconds of overtime, the Lady Wildcats broke a scoreless tie with Ella Bulava's game-winning goal in a Class 3A Section 3 matchup on Monday, October 3, at Rossi Field at Greater Latrobe High School.

Both teams had golden opportunities in regulation but failed to cash in.

Latrobe was awarded a penalty shot with just over 27 minutes remaining in the second half, but Regan Reilly's shot missed right.

Plum's Annabel Arhin had a chance to put the Mustangs on the board just before the midpoint of the second half. A corner kick resulted in a crowd in front of the Latrobe net, and Arhin got a foot on the ball with a clear shot from point blank range but it sailed harmlessly over the cage.

The Mustangs had another great scoring chance go amiss in the final half-minute of regulation. Plum's Camryn Rogers had an open net in front of her, with Latrobe's Makenna Malone and goalkeeper Sofia DeCerb both on their backs on the turf to each side of her, but Rogers' shot went right of the goalpost.

The golden goal came when Ella Bulova dribbled left of the goal to about 8 yards out and fired a shot past two Plum defenders and over the hands of Plum goalkeeper Malayna Smith with 4:58 remaining in the first overtime period. The Latrobe bench quickly emptied as the Lady Wildcats raced onto the pitch to celebrate knocking the Mustangs from the unbeaten ranks.

The win puts Latrobe (6-2-2, 6-1-1) only a half game behind Plum (10-1-0, 8-1-0) in the section standings, with the teams splitting their regular season series. Both teams still have a tough game remaining with Franklin Regional, who sits one game behind Latrobe in the standings.

Next up for Latrobe is a section matchup at Penn Hills on 10/5. Plum will host North Catholic for a non-conference game on 10/5.
