GCC Boys Win Outright Section Title with 75-36 Victory at Jeannette

Greensburg Central Catholic made their case for a high seed in the upcoming WPIAL playoffs with an impressive 75-36 rout of Jeannette on February 12 in Jeannette. The Saturday afternoon matinee was a rescheduled matchup between the perennial rivals, and gave GCC the outright championship in WPIAL Class 2A Section 3. GCC won the earlier matchup at home with the Jayhawks by 20 points on January 11.

The Centurions wasted no time getting down to business. Holding Jeannette scoreless for the first 5 minutes of the game, GCC held a 14-6 lead as they headed into the second quarter.

From there it got worse for the Hawks. GCC put up 23 points in the second, with Tyree Turner, Brevan Williams, and Franco Alvarez doing the damage in the paint. Anton Good scored 7 of the Jayhawks 10 points as Jeannette trailed 37-15 at halftime.

Good put up 10 more in the third quarter, including two 3s, but there wasn't much scoring support from the other Jayhawks to help out. Meanwhile, GCC spread the ball around among 6 players in a 21-point quarter that had them out front 58-30 heading to the final frame.

Most of the final 8 minutes were played under a mercy-ruled clock, with GCC head coach Christian Hyland getting in some playing time for his bench. The Centurions outscored the Jayhawks 17-6 to seal the season sweep of Jeannette, with Jeannette's only points coming from a pair of 3-point shots.

The Centurions were led by Franco Alvarez with 18 points, Brevan Williams 15, Tyree Turner 14, and Ryan Appleby with 12. Anton Good was half of the Jayhawks offense with his 18-point afternoon, including three from behind the arc. Jeannette had six 3s in total as a team, with GCC working close to the basket and only having two 3-point field goals in the game.

GCC (16-3, 9-1) and Jeannette (10-11, 4-6) will both now wait to find out their seeding and pairings in the WPIAL playoffs, to be announced on Monday.
