Kiski Area's Samuel Plazio and Eliza Miller Repeat Run to Gold at 2023 WCCA Cross Country Championships
It was like deja vu for Kiski Area, as Cavaliers' long distance runners Samual Plazio and Eliza Miller repeated their 2022 gold medal finishes in both the boys and girls races at the 2023 Westmoreland County Coaches Association Cross Country Championships on Wednesday, October 11, on the course at the WCCC Youngwood campus.
Miller, a senior, capped her career as a three-time WCCA girls cross country champion, winning gold the past three years. She broke the 18 minute mark, finishing with a time of 17:57.7, easily beating her 2022 mark of 18:19.4. Amelia Barilla of Penn-Trafford finished second in 18:28.4, with Norwin's Annie Czajkowski taking the bronze medal in 18:49.5. Emerson Skatell of Greater Latrobe and Caroline Shirley of Franklin Regional rounded out the top five.
Plazio, a sophomore, will have a chance to defend his county title for two more years. He finished his championship run in 16:20.5, besting his 2022 wining time of 16:42.5. Franklin Regional's Nathan Kociela was the runner-up at 16:32.2, with third place going to Nick Szekely of GCC with a time of 16:39.5. Rounding out the top five were Norwin's Luke Simpson and Enzo Jiancristoforo.
In the race for team champions, Norwin will add both a boys and girls championship trophy to their case by winning the large schools category. In the small schools category, 2022 champion Kiski Area repeated as the boys small schools winner and Derry Area's girls backed up their 2022 team championship with another win.
