GCC Wins 6-1 in Non-Conference Girls Soccer Battle with Greensburg Salem

In what amounted to a tune-up for both teams heading into the playoffs, Greensburg Central Catholic scored three goals in each half to beat Greensburg Salem 6-1 in a non-conference matchup on Wednesday, October 17, at Offutt Field in Greensburg. The teams met in an afternoon game shortly after WPIAL playoff brackets were released and each found out their seed and opponent for opening round play. GCC received the number two seed in Class A and will face Riverside at 1 PM Saturday at Hampton. Greensburg Salem received the 16 seed in Class AAA and has a tough task ahead, beginning with their road game at top-seed Mars on Saturday at 5 PM. But first, there was a game to play for bragging rights in zipcode 15601.

Right from the opening kick, GCC raced toward the Golden Lions end, scoring on the first shot of the game from sophomore Samantha Felder as only 21 seconds had ticked off the clock. Freshman midfielder Tatum Gretz put the second point on the board for the Lady Centurions only 3- 1/2 minutes later with a shot past Lady Golden Lions goalkeeper Jordyn Anderson. GCC made it 3-0 on a goal by Brenna Springer with 26:08 left on the first half clock. But after three goals in the opening 14 minutes, neither team scored again in the half and GCC took the 3-0 lead to halftime.

GCC opened their second half scoring with the second goal for Tatum Gretz with 33:13 left to play. That was followed by a pair of Nemeth goals three minutes apart, junior Samantha Nemeth's goal at the 28:21 mark, and sophomore Jessica Nemeth goal with 25:22 left in the game. The 6-0 Lady Centurions lead held up until the final minute of play when Greensburg Salem's Emma Turin headed a corner kick into the net in the final seconds of play, breaking up the shutout and giving GCC the 6-1 win.

Bella Skatell started in goal for GCC and played most of the game, stopping everything that came in her direction before giving way to freshman Lindsey Szekely who was in goal for the finish of the game. Greensburg Salem starting keeper Jordyn Anderson gave way to senior Autumn Sarsfield who saw scoreless playing time in net to finish the second half.

GCC ends the regular season with a 9-2-0 conference record, 10-2-0 overall. Greensburg Salem heads to the playoffs with a 6-5-1 conference record, 6-11-1 overall.
