Dominant Second Half Boosts Kiski Area Boys to 54-49 Win over Plum

As the second quarter horn sounded, it seemed that the Kiski Area boys had lost their rhythm. Cue up the Cavaliers marching band drumline for an assist. After falling behind by 8 at halftime, Kiski Area rode an 11-point second half effort by freshman Kyrell Hutcherson to beat Plum 54-49 in a Class 5A Section 3 matchup on Tuesday, December 18, at Kiski Area High School. 

The Cavaliers led he Mustangs 12-9 after the opening quarter, but Plum exploded for 22 points spread among six players in the second to take a 31-23 lead as the teams hit the locker rooms. Perhaps it was the Kiski Area drumline performance at halftime that helped the Cavs find their rhythm, but they were all on the same sheet of music in the third quarter, putting up 17 points while holding the Mustangs to 7, as the Cavaliers took a slim 40-38 lead into the final frame. Kiski Area scored 14 points to Plum's 11 in the final quarter, including going 6-of-9 from the charity stripe, to hold off the Mustangs and secure their first section win. 

Hutcherson finished with 13 to lead the Cavs, with Ryne Wallace and Nick Smith each chipping in for 9. Connor Moss had game-high honors with 19 points for Plum, and Ian Dryburgh contributed 10.  

Both teams hold identical 1-1 records in conference play, with Kiski Area's overall record at 2-5 versus a 1-5 overall mark for Plum.
