Baseball - GCC vs Jeannette

Greensburg Central Catholic clinches WPIAL Class 2-A  Baseball Section Title with a 9-2 victory over rival Jeannette on Tuesday, May 08, 2018. 

With the WPIAL Class 2-A section title on the line Greensburg Central Catholic pitcher Antonio Cavallo struck out nine Jayhawk batters while battling Jeannette pitcher Tre Cunningham at Bill Mazeroski Field at Hempfield Park on Tuesday, May 08, 2018.

Neither team scored in the opening inning and GCC kept Jeannette off the scoreboard in the top of the second inning.

GCC then drew first blood by scoring two runs in the bottom of the second inning. Paul Rice drove in Ben LaCarte with a single to get the scoring started. Rice then scored himself on a error by Jeannette catcher Zander Malik.

The Centurions added four more runs in the bottom of the third inning thanks to singles by Bryce Kurpiel and Ethan Bailey making the score 6-0.

The Jayhawks got onto the scoreboard in the top of the fifth inning with two runs. Tyler Elliot singled to right field scoring Zander Malik and then Zach Berginc scored making the score 6-2 in the top of the fifth inning.

GCC answered back with three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning when Ethan Bailey singled to center field scoring James Rice and Bryce Kurpiel making the score 8-2. Ben Lacarte then scored and the Centurions took a 9-2 lead into the sixth inning.

Neither team was able to add any runs in the sixth inning or seventh inning as GCC clinched the section with the 9-2 victory.

The Centurions were sound in the field with no errors however the Jayhawks had four.

Tre Cunningham took the loss for Jeannette.He allowed ten hits and nine runs over five
innings, striking out eight.

Leading the Centurions offensively was third baseman Ethan Bailey who went 2 for 3 at the plate with 4 RBIs earning him the player of the game and the Centurion helmet.
