WCCA Holds 2nd Annual Summer Hoops Shootout

The Westmoreland County Coaches Association held their 2nd annual Summer Basketball Shootout on Friday, July 6, at Hempfield Area's Spartan Fieldhouse. The event is played as a round-robin tournament, with twelve teams playing 3 games each over the course of the day. A modified scoring system is used with most of the game played under a running clock which consisted of two 18-minute halves. The shootout is played mostly for fun and bragging rights, as official scorebooks are not kept and no overall champion is crowned, although the game scoring is kept on the scoreboards inside the gym.

The event is an opportunity for fans and coaches to get an early look at the makeup of the teams for the upcoming season just before many of the players settle into training for fall sports. Participating teams included Derry Area, Southmoreland, Mount Pleasant, Greensburg Central Catholic, Kiski Area, Burrell, Connellsville, Belle Vernon, Hempfield, Valley, Latrobe, and Jeannette.
