Penn-Trafford Reclaims WCCA 7-on-7 Football Championship Crown

Penn-Trafford is back in their comfort spot to open the 2018 high school football season. The Warriors reclaimed the title spot at the Westmoreland County Coaches Association's 7-on-7 tournament with a championship game win over Jeannette in the annual event held Thursday, July 19th at Greater Latrobe's Rossi Field.

Penn-Trafford earned the right to play in the championship game by winning the "B" bracket which included teams from Mount Pleasant, Yough, Burrell, Greater Latrobe, and reigning 2016 and 2017 champion Hempfield Area. The Jayhawks took top honors in bracket "A" which included Derry Area, Franklin Regional, Southmoreland, Norwin, Greensburg Salem, and Valley. The Warriors' championship win is their 4th in the past six years, including a streak of three straight from 2013 through 2015.

The 7-on-7 format has become popular as a way to keep football "skills" players active in the off season, and many travel leagues and elite tournaments are held across the country. The game is played as a "running clock" timed event on a 40-yard half of the standard football field, with modified rules and scoring. All 7-on-7 plays are passing plays and the quarterback doesn't face a pass rush, but the amount of time available to release the pass is only a few seconds or the QB is considered sacked. A player advancing the ball is down as soon as they are touched. With the exception of a player to act as the center, offensive and defensive linemen do not participate.

The 2018 WPIAL high school football season opens on August 24 with Week Zero games or scrimmages at the team's option. The first day of official league scheduled games is August 31.
