2018 WCCA Boys Golf

Brady Pevarnik Goes Back-to-Back as WCCA Boys Golf Champion

It might as well have been the best two-out-of-three. Greater Latrobe senior and 2017 champion Brady Pevarnik, and Franklin Regional senior Palmer Jackson, the 2016 champion, both carded 3-under par 69 to lead the field in the 2018 Westmoreland County Coaches Association Boys Golf Tournament at Latrobe Elks Golf Club. While the pair will share a new tournament record at 69, as they shared the previous record of 70, Pevarnik was awarded the first place medal by way of a tie-breaking scorecard playoff. While this was their final WCCA championship tournament, there will be plenty of opportunities coming up for them to battle again before Pevarnik heads to Penn State and Jackson to Notre Dame, where they'll continue their golf careers. The two friends, who sometimes play as a pair in other events, are expected to leave their mark again in the WPIAL and PIAA playoffs before they hang up their high school team golf shirt for the final time.

Finishing alone in third with 74, five shots behind Jackson in second, was Greensburg Salem's Jeff Mankins. Franklin Regional's Chuck Traggresser finished 4th in a tie-breaker over Burrell's Tiger Hubbard, both with 75. The rest of the top ten receiving medals were Belle Vernon's Jake Caldwell at 76, Penn-Trafford's Cade Patterson at 77, Latrobe's Jared Stein and Franklin Regional's Michael Wareham with 78s, and Tim Pisula of Mount Pleasant with 79.

Franklin Regional beat Latrobe 389-399 for top team honors in the large school division. Kiski School topped Mount Pleasant 419-421 in the small schools team competition.
