Sanders Runs Wild as Jeannette Sours GCC Homecoming 48-14

Jeannette's Imani Sanders ran for over 200 yards, and scored 5 rushing touchdowns, as the Jayhawks beat rival Greensburg Central Catholic 48-14 on October 11, at the Centurions' stadium in Carbon.

A standing room only crowd filled the stands and stood along the fences as the one-loss Centurions hosted the undefeated Jayhawks in a much anticipated battle of conference opponents and local rivals. A large crowd of GCC alumni were introduced prior to the teams taking the field on a seasonably warm homecoming night for the Centurions.

Jeannette got on the scoreboard first as Imani Sanders scored the first of his touchdowns at 4:23 of the first quarter, with the PAT making the score 7-0.

Bayley Molter was next into the scorebook for the Hawks as he grabbed a touchdown pass from James Sanders less than two minutes into the second quarter. With the PAT, Jeannette led 14-0.

Imani Sanders found the end zone a second time from one yard out with 3 -1/2 minutes left in the half. The kick failed, making the Hawks lead 20-0.

Imani Sanders collected the hat trick touchdown in the final minute of the half from inside the five, but a two point conversion attempt failed. Jeannette took a 26-0 lead to the locker room.

During the halftime festivities, Anne Deforest, escorted by running back Zach Kuvinka, was crowned GCC's homecoming queen for 2019.

GCC got an early second half boost as Luke Mazowiecki grabbed an errant James Sanders pass and returned it 72 yards for a touchdown, with Nate Ward's PAT kick trimming the score to 26-7.

But Imani Sanders quickly negated the miscue with a 25-yard touchdown run, and the failed two point conversion had Jeannette leading 32-7.

Still in the third quarter, Joe Blahovec grabbed a David Altimore pass from 11 yards away to give the Centurions their only offensive touchdown of he game, with Nate Ward's boot adding on the PAT.

Imani Sanders added his fifth and final touchdown before the third quarter closed on a 6-yard run, with a James Sanders to Jackson Pruitt toss adding the two point conversion.

Jeannette closed out the scoring in the fourth quarter when Roberto Smith scampered 51 yards to paydirt. A Jackson Pruitt to Bayley Molter pass added the final two points of the contest. Jeannette drove deep inside GCC territory in the final minutes before head coach Roy Hall sent in the call to run out the clock in victory formation.

The Jayhawks improve to 8-0 overall, 4-0 in conference, with their final regular season home game against Riverview next week, before the final week showdown for the section title at Clairton in Week 9.

GCC sports a 6-2 overall record, 4-2 in conference, and has a pair of non-conference games to finish out the season. They travel to Cornell next week before hosting Class 2A Southmoreland for senior night in Week 9. They wait to see if they'll claim one of the two wild card playoff spots among 3rd place teams in Class 1A.
