Latrobe beats Plum 28-20 to clinch a playoff spot in WPIAL Class 5A Playoffs

Latrobe started sophomore quarterback Bobby Fetter against the visiting Plum Mustangs on a beautiful fall evening at Memorial Stadium in Latrobe on Friday night Oct. 11, 2019 with playoff implications for both teams. 

He only needed two plays before scoring and putting the Wildcats ahead of the Mustangs in their important WPIAL Class 5A Big East conference matchup. Latrobe would never relinquish the lead in the game that meant the winner clinched a playoff spot.

Fetter raced 58 yards for a touchdown scoring at the 11:16 mark of the opening quarter putting the home team ahead 6-0.

Senior kicker John McHenry added the extra point and the score was 7-0.
 
On Latrobe’s next possession, Fetter would score on his second carry of the night as he eluded Plum defenders and raced down the sideline for the score from 57 yards out. The Wildcats extended their lead to 14-0 after McHenry added the extra point.

Plum managed to get to the Wildcats side of the field and were attempting a 32-yard field goal by senior kicker Tyler Kolankowski when Latrobe junior Dylan Gustafson blocked the kick and returned it 75 yards for a touchdown, giving the home team a 20-0 lead with 2:49 left in the first quarter.

McHenry added the extra point and the score was 21-0 as the opening quarter came to a close.

Both teams traded possessions in the second quarter that saw Plum quarterback Jake Miller leave the game following an injury he received at the end of an 18-yard run.

Junior quarterback Ryan Hubner entered the game and drove the team the rest of the way down the field. Plum junior Reed Martin took a direct snap and ran 15 yards before diving across the goal line to score a touchdown at the 2:04 mark of the second quarter, putting the Mustangs on the scoreboard.

After the extra point failed the score was Latrobe 21 and Plum 6.

The third quarter started and ended without any scoring setting up a fourth quarter filled with plenty of drama.

The Mustangs defense recorded a couple sacks that led to great field position that Plum took advantage of when Martin scored his second touchdown of the night from 3 yards out, and the Mustangs seemed to be staging a comeback.

With a little more than 10 minutes to play in the fourth quarter Plum closed the lead to 21-13.

Latrobe then drove the ball down the field and Fetter scored his third rushing touchdown of the night from seven yards out, increasing Latrobe’s lead to 28-13 when McHenry added the extra point.

Plum wasn’t ready to give up as Reed Martin caught a 19-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Ryan Hubner, cutting Latrobe’s lead to 28-20 with 3:40 remaining in the game.

Plum’s defense stood strong and got the ball back to their offense on Latrobe’s 27-yard line with 2:33 to play in the game.

Plum drove the ball to the one-yard line setting up a dramatic end to the game as the Mustangs lined up following a timeout for a fourth and goal play. 

Mustangs running back Reed Martin attempted to run around the corner but was stuffed by Latrobe defensive back Logan Gustafson, preserving the Wildcats victory with four seconds left in the game.

Latrobe hung on to beat Plum 28-20, earning a trip to the WPIAL Class 5A playoffs.
