Nate Ward OT Goal Beats Springdale 1-0, Sends GCC Boys to PIAA Semifinals

Greensburg Central Catholic and Springdale knew their PIAA Class A quarterfinal playoff game would be a battle. The teams had faced each other just two weeks prior in the WPIAL playoff round, with GCC coming out on top 4-2 on their way to the WPIAL title. So it was fitting that, with the victor only two wins away from a state title and the loser ending their season, that the 0-0 score after 80 minutes raised the stakes to the max, as the first team to score in overtime would decide the fate of both.

It was a moment in need of a big time player to make a big time play. Enter GCC's Nate Ward, who got behind the Springdale defense less than three minutes into the overtime period and ripped a shot from left to right, past Springdale keeper Andrew Haus for the game winner. It was the second big time game winner in a week for Ward, who had the solo goal in the Centurions WPIAL championship win over Winchester Thurston only 8 days earlier.

There were few shots on goal throughout the game on both sides, although both teams turned up the heat with good scoring opportunities in the final minutes of regulation. But Springdale's Haus and GCC keeper Max House both kept the ball out of their net to send the game to overtime.

GCC improves to 17-3-1 on the season and will move on to meet Winchester Thurston on Tuesday at Hampton for the right to play in the state championship game in Hershey. Springdale closes their season with a 17-5 record.
