For Second Year in a Row, Late Rally Lifts Yough Girls Lacrosse to Win over GCC

Sydney Murray scored a pair of goals inside the final 2- 1/2 minutes of the game to cap a late 4-goal rally and lead Yough girls lacrosse to a 10-9 win over host Greensburg Central Catholic on Thursday, April 4, 2019. For GCC, the game had to feel eerily similar to last season when Yough bounced back late after trailing most of the game to beat the Centurions 13-12 at Cougar Mountain Stadium, as the Cougars' Rebecca Ghion scored the game winner just before time expired. 

Laney Coddington put the first points on the board early for GCC with her goal at 22:24 remaining in the first half. Leah Jacobson added her name to the scoresheet only 28 seconds later and GCC was quickly off to a 2-0 lead. Ryelee Overly broke the ice for the Yough Cougars with her goal just inside the 20 minute mark on the first half clock. The teams then alternated scoring on a pair of goals each, with Jacinta Jolly picking up both for the Centurions and Rebecca Ghion and Renee Patricio scoring one each for the Cougars. That's when, holding a slim 4-3 lead with 12:47 remaining in the half, the Centurions went on a run. GCC goals by Abbey Osche, Emily Zaziski, and Elizabeth Kiliany over a 2- 1/2 minute stretch quickly opened up a 4-goal margin and sent the teams to halftime with the Centurions leading 7-3. 

Yough got on the board first in the second half when Sydney Murray netted her first goal of the game. Jolly bumped the GCC lead back to 4 points again with her 3rd tally of the game, but then Ghion scored twice for Yough to make the GCC lead 8-6. A fourth goal by Jolly stretched the Centurions lead to 9-6 with 8:30 left in the game and it appeared that GCC had answers for every time the Cougars got close. But as daylight faded away and the temperature dropped, the Cougars got hot and GCC suddenly went cold. Ghion started the Yough rally when her shot hit the twine in the GCC net with only 7:30 left in the half, and teammate Dakota Cochran put her name in the book with a goal at 5:43 to play, and suddenly the Centurions lead was only 9-8. That's when Murray tied the game with her goal at 2:26, and suddenly it was anybody's game to win. The game winner from Murray completed the hat trick for her and put Yough in front 10-9, and the Cougars defense held the only lead they had in the game for the final 1:09 to secure the victory.

GCC's Jacinta Jolly and Yough's Rebecca Ghion shared game-high honors with four goals each while the Cougars' Sydney Murray had the only other multiple goal tally with three. The winning goalie for the Cougars was Krystal Schweinberg. Lyndsey Szekely handled net minder duties for the Centurions.
