GCC Opens Conference Schedule with 32-13 Win at Riverview

A good start to the season had to be one of the main goals of Greensburg Central Catholic football as they looked over their 2019 schedule. With a new head coach and a new quarterback at the helm, early success would bring experience and confidence that will be needed when they face the perennial heavyweights of the WPIAL Class A Eastern Conference. Now two weeks into the season, the Centurions are sporting a 2-0 record and have to be happy with how they got there. Following last week's Week Zero win at home over Monessen, the Centurions picked up their second 'W' with a solid 32-13 Saturday afternoon win over Riverview on the natural surface of Riverside Park in Oakmont.

GCC opened the scoring when Brandon Brown picked off a Riverside pass deep in their territory and returned it for a touchdown. The two-point conversion attempt failed, and the Centurions led 6-0 at 6:39 of the first quarter.

Zach Dlugos scored GCC's first offensive touchdown on a two-yard run at 9:07 of the second quarter. The conversion attempt, set up from kicking formation, was no good, making the score 12-0.

Riverview got on the board with Zach Hanlon's touchdown run on a 3rd-and-4 with 2:26 left in the half. A successful PAT kick made it 12-7, which was the score when both teams headed into the locker rooms for intermission.

Neither team threatened early in the second half until the Centurions mounted a scoring drive at 5:35 of the third quarter, capped by quarterback David Altimore diving inside the pylon for the score. For the third time in the game, the two-point conversion attempt failed, making the Centurions' lead 18-7.

A David Altimore to Luke Mazowiecki 39-yard touchdown pass before the end of the quarter was followed by Altimore adding the extra two-points on a keeper and the score was 26-7 as the quarter ended.

GCC's final six points came on a 3-yard pass from Altimore to Joe Blahovec with 4:52 left in the game, as the conversion attempt failed.

Riverview added a late score as Peyton Aitken ran in from two-yards out. The two-point conversion was no good, and the Centurions took over at 1:20 left to play, running out the clock with Nate Dlugos under center for the final plays of the 32-13 victory.

Greensburg Central Catholic hosts Clairton next Friday, who are uncharacteristically 0-2 early in the season following two non-conference losses. Riverview travels to Charleroi for a Friday night non-conference game.
