Angelika Dewicki Takes Low Medalist Honors, Leads GCC to 2nd WCCA Girls Golf Title
Greensburg Central Catholic placed three medalists in the top ten, including individual champion Angelika Dewicki, in claiming the team champion's trophy at the 4th annual Westmoreland County Coaches Association Girls Golf Championship held Wednesday, September 4, at Champion Lakes Golf Club.
This was only the second year that the WCCA has awarded a team champion, an honor that GCC also took last year by placing five players in the top ten, including the top three. The girls teams play a 9-hole event, with the front nine at Champion Lakes as their battleground.
This is Angelika Dewicki's first WCCA individual championship, although she was a member of last years winning GCC squad with her 7th place finish. This year she swapped finishing spots on the final leaderboard with teammate and 2018 champion Meghan Zambruno by shooting a 41, claiming this year's top honors.
After Dewicki's lone 41 at the top, there were ties at 43, 44, 45, and 47 strokes, with all ties for medals being broken by scorecard playoffs. Norwin's Jules Crosby took the 2nd place medal in a scorecard playoff with 3rd place Ella Zambruno of GCC at 43. Lauren Barber of Penn-Trafford won the scorecard playoff with Balla Mercurio of Kiski Area with 44 for 4th and 5th place medals. Raina Jones from Hempfield got the nod in 6th place with her card beating Meghan Zambruno with 45. Franklin Regional's Caroline Tragresser picked up the 8th place medal in her scorecard playoff over Maria Kruppa of Belle Vernon, both with 47. Kendall Vertes of Penn-Trafford rounded out the top ten with her score of 48.
Next week Westmoreland County boys golf teams will compete in their annual WCCA championship on Thursday at the Latrobe Elks course.
