Hempfield beats Norwin 34-17 in WPIAL Class 6A action

The path to a berth in the WPIAL Class 6A postseason usually isn’t determined at such an early point in the football season but Friday night’s county clash between Hempfield and Norwin could be a deciding factor come playoff time.
Both teams were trying to rebound from being beaten in Week 1 action by 6A powerhouses Pine Richland and North Allegheny.
Hempfield’s Nathan Roby broke in the new artificial turf surface at Norwin Knights Stadium as the Knights had no answer for the senior running back who gained 141 yards rushing and had seven catches for  152 yards while scoring three touchdowns. That was just his offensive contribution as he also intercepted Norwin senior quarterback Jack Salopek two times in the first quarter.
Roby started the scoring on the night when he caught an 80-yard touchdown pass from senior quarterback Blake Remaley at the 7:35 mark of the first quarter.
Hempfield junior kicker Ben Kissel added the extra point and Hempfield led 7-0.
Norwin’s Salopek got the home team on the scoreboard when he found senior wide receiver Sean Pavlic in the corner of the end zone on a 31-yard touchdown strike at the 4:36 mark of the first quarter. 
The extra point attempt failed and Hempfield remained in the lead 7-6 until Remaley found the end zone on a two-yard scamper with 25 seconds left in the first quarter.
Kissel added the extra point and the Spartans led 14-6 as the first quarter came to a close.

Norwin freshman kicker Joey Castle opened the scoring  at the 9:25 mark of the second quarter when he nailed a 37-yard field goal and the Knights closed the score to 14-9.

Hempfield senior wide receiver Randy Nelson hauled in a 8-yard touchdown pass from Remaley with 5:34 seconds left in the second quarter, increasing Hempfield’s lead to 21-9.
The teams headed to the locker rooms with a halftime score of 21-9.
In the second half, the teams traded posessions until Roby score his second touchdown of the game when he emerged from a pile of Norwin defenders and sprinted 22 yards for a touchdown.
Hempfield missed the extra point and the score was 27-9 as the third quarter ended.

Norwin opened the fourth quarter scoring when Salopek and Pavlic hooked up for their second touchdown of the night - this time a 15-yard touchdown pass.

Norwin went for two points and Salopek found tight end Tanner Krevokuch in the side of the end zone making the score 27-17.

Roby ended the scoring  when he scored his third touchdown of the night at 6:57 in the fourth quarter on a two-yard run making the score 34-17.

Hempfield claimed the conference victory over their Route 30 rival.

Hempfield improved their conference record to 1-1  and  their overall record to 2-1.

Norwin remains winless this season as their record is 0-2 conference and 0-3 overall.
