Norwin Girls Soccer Wins 2-1 Battle with Penn-Trafford for First Place Honors

When the girls soccer programs of Norwin and Penn-Trafford get together on the pitch for one of their high-spirited regular season in-conference battles, there is usually something big at stake; the top spot in the WPIAL Class 4A Section 3 standings. Such was the case again for the two perennial foes, as both teams sported 5-0 section play records before Norwin hosted Penn-Trafford on the new turf at Norwin Knights Stadium on Monday, September 23. The winner would inherit a one game lead on the loser, who would take sole possession of second place in the section, with both teams already having beaten third place Connellsville. This time it was Norwin who emerged as king of the hill with their 2-1 victory in the first of two regular season matchups, with Penn-Trafford having another chance to best the Knights when they play again on October 14 at Warrior Stadium.

After a first half in which neither team scored, the Lady Knights finally broke the deadlock in the 55th minute when Katelyn Kauffman's header out of the crowd in front of the net found the back of the Warriors' net, giving the Knights a 1-0 lead. 

Norwin added a second goal late in the game when Lacey Bernick planted a shot into the twine from point blank range with two-and-a-half minutes left to play. It turned out to be an important goal, as the Warriors' Sarah Nguyen blasted a long range bomb into the Knights net with 87 seconds left in the game. But the goal was too little too late as the Knights would hold on to claim their third win in a row over the Warriors, after beating Penn-Trafford twice in 2018.

Liz Waszkiewicz was the victorious goal keeper for the Lady Knights, with Megan Giesey handling the net minder duties for the Lady Warriors.

Norwin moves their record to 6-0-0 in section play, 8-1-0 overall. Penn-Trafford drops to 5-1-0 in section, 7-3-0 overall.
