Burrell Avenges Last Year with 40-6 Win Over Yough

A year is a long time to wait to get even with an opponent. So it must have felt pretty sweet for head coach Shawn Liotta and his Burrell Buccaneers when, 364 days after suffering a 35-6 beating at Yough, the Bucs turned the tables on the Cougars with a 40-6 pounding on Burrell's grass surface on Friday, September 20.

Burrell's aerial assault on the Cougars came early and often. Bucs' quarterback Alex Arledge needed less than 3 minutes to put Burrell on the scoreboard, connecting with Zach Miller for a 24-yard touchdown pass, the first of five TDs that Arledge would throw on the night. The PAT kick failed, and the score remained 6-0.

Burrell's next touchdown came on a third-and-goal from the 14 yard line as Arledge connected with Seth Fischbach in the end zone. The two-point conversion failed and Burrell led 12-0 with 2:49 left in the opening quarter.

Arledge connected through the air to Miller again for his next touchdown with 3:59 left in the second quarter, adding the two-point conversion with a pass to Fischbach, and the Bucs had a 20-0 lead when the bands took the field for halftime.

Yough took the kickoff in the second half and moved the ball well, capping a long drive with quarterback Gamal Marballie's touchdown run from short yardage with 7:40 to play in the third. But the two-point conversion failed and Yough was a close as they would get for the rest of the game.

A minute later, Arledge went back to Fischbach for his next touchdown pass, a 33 yard toss that gave the Bucs a 27-6 lead after a successful PAT kick. Another Arledge to Fischbach hookup in the final minute of the third quarter gave the Bucs a 34-6 lead after the PAT. Burrell's final touchdown came with 23.1 left in the game as Zach Miller intercepted Gamal Marballie and returned it for a touchdown, with the failed PAT kick setting the final score at 40-6.

Burrell sits right in the middle of the standings in the Class 3A Big East Conference standings at 2-2, overall 3-2. Yough falls to 1-3 in the conference, overall 1-4. Burrell hosts Deer Lakes next week while Yough is home against Freeport.
