Norwin Outruns Latrobe Boys for 66-53 Section Win

When Norwin and Latrobe get the boys together to play roundball, it might be more appropriate to begin with the firing of a starter's pistol than having a tip-off. These teams definitely like to run.

With the added benefit of getting in a little early workout for track season, Norwin hosted the Wildcats in an important Class 6A Section 3 matchup on Friday, January 10, on the Knights' hardwood. When the dust finally settled, Norwin had their first section win of the season with the 66-53 victory over the visiting Wildcats.

Five players got on the board for Norwin in the opening quarter as they opened a 14-9 first quarter lead. Ty Bilinsky and Jayden Walker both were hot in the second for Norwin, with 7 points each in contributing to the 21 total for the Knights. The Wildcats' Mike Noonan followed up his 6 points in the first quarter with 6 more in the second, but Latrobe trailed Norwin 35-25 at the midway point.

The halftime break didn't slow the pace in the third quarter, although the margin remained the same as both teams put 19 more on the board. Ty Bilinsky added 10 for the Knights and Noonan chipped in 9 for Latrobe.

Norwin kept the Cats at a ten-point distance throughout the final quarter, as they outscored Latrobe 12-9 on their way to victory before an enthusiastic home crowd.

Latrobe's Mike Noonan led all scorers with 25 points, and teammate Ryan Sickenberger added a dozen of his own. Ty Bilinsky led the Knights with 21, as Jayden Walker had 14 and Josh Williams 11. Walker notched a double-double with his dominating 17 rebound performance.

Norwin and Latrobe both sport 1-3 records in section play, but the Knights hold the upper hand with their overall record of 9-3, compared to the Wildcats at 3-8 overall.

Next up for both teams is another section rivalry game on January 14 against a Westmoreland County opponent. Norwin travels to take on the Penn-Trafford Warriors while Latrobe hosts the Hempfield Spartans.
