Yough Girls Improve on the Second Matchup, But Fall to West Mifflin 46-23

Whether you call it a moral victory or simply a big improvement, Yough girls basketball fared much better in their second matchup of the season with West Mifflin than they did with the first. The Lady Cougars lost the first game 65-11 at West Mifflin on January 6, but the scorebook will show they came ready to compete for the rematch on January 29 at Yough High School.

West Mifflin held a 12-6 lead after one quarter of play, yet the Cougars kept the Lady Titans well within sight through two periods, trailing only 24-14 at intermission. Kaylynn Odelli had 6 of Yough's 8 points in the second quarter.

The Cougars got the best of West Mifflin in a low scoring third quarter, slightly outscoring the Titans 6 to 5, and cutting the deficit to only 8 with a quarter left to play. But West Mifflin put the game out of reach in the fourth, as Shelby Genes scored 7 of the Titans' 17 points, while the Cougars only scored 3 more points before the final horn sounded, and West Mifflin claimed a 46-23 win and the season sweep of Yough.

Yough's Kaylynn Odelli took home game-high honors with her 14-point game. Shelby Genes and Lauren Yuhas each scored 13 points for West Mifflin.

Next on the schedule for Yough (3-17, 0-12) is a road trip to Elizabeth Forward on 2/3. West Mifflin (10-8, 8-4) will host Mount Pleasant on 2/3.
