Armstrong blanks Greensburg Salem 40-0 in WPIAL Class 4A action
Armstrong attacked Greensburg Salem with a dynamic passing performance to shut out Greensburg Salem 40-0 at Offutt Field in Greensburg on Oct. 8, 2020.
Greensburg Salem received the opening kick off but was unable to do much with it and had to punt to the visiting Riverhawks.
That’s when Armstrong sophomore quarterback Cadin Olsen marched the Riverhawks down the field on an opening drive that led to senior kicker Adam Hudock splitting the uprights at 7:25 left in the first quarter, giving the visiting team all the points they would need to beat the Golden Lions.
While Greensburg Salem was unable to do much with the football in the first half that was not the case for the Riverhawks, who scored again with 3:37 left in the opening quarter when Olsen found a wide open Jesse Hepler on a 29-yard touchdown pass making the score 9-0.
Hudock kicked the extra point and the Riverhawks took a 10-0 lead over the Golden Lions.
Greensburg Salem fumbled on the next drive and Armstrong sophomore Jaxson Crissman recovered it deep in Golden Lion territory.
Olsen then threw his second touchdown pass to senior wide receiver Noah Cooper and the score was 16-0 with 2:14 left in the first quarter.
Armstrong thought they added a two point conversion when Hudock threw a pass to Dylan Cujas, however, a penalty was called against the Riverhawks and the score remained 16-0 when the opening quarter ended.
The Riverhawks extended their lead when senior running back Cole Brown scored a touchdown on a short run with 9:27 left in the second quarter.
Hudock added the extra point and the home team was down 23-0.
Armstrong wasn’t finished scoring yet as Hudock added a 22-yard field goal making it 26-0 with 4:57 left in the second quarter.
The Riverhawks then added insult to injury when with only 5.2 seconds left in the first half Olsen found senior Aaron Robb on a 30-yard pass in the center of the field. Robb carried two Golden Lion defenders with him into the end zone, and the score was 32-0 as the opening half expired.
Hudock added the extra point with no time on the clock, and the Riverhawks took a commanding 33-0 lead into halftime.
Greensburg Salem kicked to Armstrong to start the second half of play.
The refreshed Golden Lions defense was able to force an Armstrong punt and things were looking up for the home team.
Greensburg Salem senior quarterback Alexander Briggs marched the Golden Lions down the field converting four consecutive first downs before stalling on the 9-yard line when they were unable to pick up a first down on 4th and 8.
The Riverhawks finished their scoring on the night when Olsen threw his second touchdown pass of the night to senior Jesse Hepler, and the Riverhawks went up 39-0.
Hudock continued his strong kicking performance when he added the extra point making the score 40-0 with 7:39 left on a running clock.
Greensburg Salem sophomore kick returner Jerome Wallish then gave the home team fans something to cheer about when he gathered the kickoff and zig zagged through Armstrong defenders to return it to the 7-yard line.
Greensburg Salem attempted to take advantage of the long kick return and put some points on the board.
Armstrong refused to let the shut out slip away and stopped the Golden Lions on the 9-yard line as time expired.
Olsen threw four touchdown passes as Armstrong improved to 3-2 on the season and 3-2 in the conference with the 40-0 victory.
Greensburg Salem fell to 1-4 on the season and 1-4 in the conference with the dissappointing loss on senior night.
