GCC Girls Remain Unbeaten with 6-2 Win over Apollo Ridge

Greensburg Central Catholic continued on their season long romp through the WPIAL Class A Section 1 schedule as the took care of business with a 6-2 win over Apollo Ridge on Tuesday, October 13, on their home turf in Carbon. 

Ashley Winnor put the first GCC goal on the board just over 9 minutes into the first half of play. GCC senior Hannah Nelson followed soon after with a goal of her own with 28:19 to play in the half. Senior Samantha Felder's goal with 12:57 remaining rounded out the scoring in the first half, and GCC held a 3-0 advantage at the halftime break. 

Felder put the Lady Centurions up 4-0 with her second goal of the game just under 6 minutes into the second half. Apollo Ridge got on the board with a goal by senior Emily Bonelli at 30 minutes left in the half to make it 4-1. But the Vikings really never threatened as junior Tatum Gretz put the GCC margin back to 4 with her goal at 9:51 left in the game. 

A pair of goals in the final minute, one by Apollo Ridge's Delaney Shaffer with 21 seconds to play and one by GCC's Bethany Winnor with 6 seconds on the clock, did nothing to alter an outcome that had already been determined as GCC claimed the 6-2 victory. 

Lyndsey Szekley was the winning goalkeeper for GCC and Adeline Baustert was the net minder for the Vikings. 

Both teams are scheduled to be back in action on Thursday, but each faces a team that has already had to forfeit games in this modified season due to the inability to field a full squad of players. The Lady Centurions (9-0-0) are set to travel to Jeannette while Apollo Ridge (4-4-0) is scheduled to host Ligonier Valley.
