Westmoreland County Cross Country Championships
GCC's Corinn Brewer and Norwin's Alex Jubert Outpace the Field at Westmoreland County Cross Country Meet
Greensburg Central Catholic junior Corinn Brewer and Norwin senior Alex Jubert outran the field to claim gold medal honors in the Westmoreland County Cross Country meet held on Thursday, October 15, at the Westmoreland County Community College course in Youngwood.
The meet was held as an alternative to the annual Westmoreland County Coaches Association sponsored meet that was canceled this year due to Covid-19 concerns. Using the same course, timing systems, and featuring many of the teams that would have been at the WCCA event, the meet was organized by cross country coaches and officials from programs throughout Westmoreland County, with sponsorship from Greensburg Central Catholic. This year's meet lacked the usual crowd of parents and fans, and well as the award presentations ceremonies of past events, but the competition otherwise went off without a hitch under blue skies, high puffy clouds, and 70 degree temperatures with a stiff breeze.
The girls were first out on the course this year, and the race came down to a battle between GCC's Corinn Brewer and Kiski Area freshman Eliza Miller. The two ran together for most of the race before Brewer's late kick carried her to the finish line 6.5 seconds before Miller crossed. Brewer's time was 19:07.1 and Miller came in at 19:13.6. It was the third consecutive gold medal in the Westmoreland County meet for Corinn Brewer.
Rounding out the top ten girls were Natalie DiCriscio (Greensburg Salem), Clara Herr (Greater Latrobe), Lizeth Sesmas (Kiski Area), Amelia Barilla (Penn-Trafford), Lexie Planinsek (Greater Latrobe), and Hempfield's Lily Schmadel, Cydney Blahovec, and Lily Murphy.
Hempfield Area took home the girls team trophy on the strength of Schmadel, Blahovec, Murphy, and Kendra Winkleblech finishing in positions 8 through 11 with Julia Snider also cracking the top 20 at position 18. Kiski Area and Norwin finished second and third place in team points.
On the boys side, Norwin's Alex Jubert pulled away from Greensburg Salem's Quintin Gatons to finish in 16:22.2, with Gatons crossing at 16:39.3.
The remainder of the top ten boys were Greater Latrobe's Drew Kozuch and Dante Frescura in 3rd and 4th, Charles Johnson (Greensburg Salem), Joseph Hill (Greater Latrobe), Patrick Driscoll (Penn-Trafford), Nick Szekely (GCC), John Dodaro (Norwin), and Ethan Kelley (Greensburg Salem).
Greensburg Salem claimed the boys team title by a one point margin over Greater Latrobe. Greensburg Salem was led by Gatons in 2nd, Johnson in 5th, Kelley in 10th, Jacob Smith in 11th, and Aaron Tressler in 20th. Norwin finished in third place in team points.
