Southmoreland Honors Seniors with 57-43 Win over Frazier

For a while, it looked like Frazier would spoil the festive atmosphere that Southmoreland had created for the senior boys in their final home game on February 7. A large crowd watched the visiting Commodores score early and often in the opening minutes of the final Class 4A Section 4 game of the season between the two teams. But Southmoreland was having non of it on this night, as they regained control and won going away, 57-43, to send the Scotties into the WPIAL playoffs on a high note.

Following the opening tip, Frazier jumped out to an 11-1 lead until the Scotties finally stopped the bleeding on a Riley Comforti 3-pointer with 3 minutes left in the opening quarter. It was the beginning of their comeback, as Southmoreland battled back to close the margin to 15-8 after one quarter.

The second quarter was all about Southmoreland as they outscored Frazier 21-5, led by the 10 points canned by Comforti. The Scotties went into the locker room at halftime up 29-20.

The pace slowed for the Scotties in the third quarter and Frazier cut the deficit by 3, as they trailed 36-30 heading to the final quarter.

But once again, it was Southmoreland's night for celebration as Comforti dropped a dozen of his team's 21 fourth quarter points on the Commodores, and the Scotties secured the 57-43 win for the home fans.

Senior Riley Comforti scored 28 points for the Scotties, with senior Brandon Peterson chipping in 10. Frazier was led by Owen Newcomer with 11 and Joshua Scotnicki with 10.

The game marked the final contest of the regular season for both teams. Southmoreland finishes with an 11-11 record, 8-4 in conference games. They await finding out their playoff seeding and matchup next week. Frazier ends their season with a 4-17 overall record, 2-10 in conference play.

Southmoreland honored their senior cheerleaders and boys basketball players in a ceremony before the game. Riley Comforti was also presented a plaque commemorating his recent surpassing of the 1000 career points plateau.
