Penn-Trafford Girls Get Final Playoff Spot with 44-40 Win at Latrobe

Before they tipped off their final section game of the season on Thursday, February 6, Latrobe and Penn-Trafford were tied in the standings with 7-6 records. Ninety minutes later, one team would own the last available playoff spot. The other will see their season end early next week.

They played the game as scheduled, and when the final horn sounded, visiting Penn-Trafford would own the playoff spot as the prize for beating Latrobe 44-40 in their Class 5A Section 3 finale.

As one would expect with two evenly matched teams, the game was close throughout. Both teams had leads, surrendered leads, and had runs to get back in the game. Penn-Trafford jump out to a 15-11 first quarter lead, but the Lady Wildcats came roaring back in the second to take a 22-20 lead at halftime.

Just as Penn-Trafford had hit a slump in the second, Latrobe had their own slump in the third, scoring only 2 points against 10 for the Lady Warriors, and Penn-Trafford was back on top 30-24 going into the fourth quarter.

While Latrobe outscored Penn-Trafford in the fourth quarter, they didn't outscore them by enough to overtake them for the win. The Wildcats battled and made it a single possession game several times, but the Warriors never let the gap get any closer than 2 points as they hung on for the 44-40 win.

Latrobe's Anna Rafferty led all scorers and was the only Wildcat in double figures with 25. She was the only Wildcat to score in every quarter. Penn-Trafford's Maura Suman also scored in every quarter and she was the only Warrior in double figures with 18.

Both teams have non-conference games left to finish out the season. Latrobe (11-9, 7-7) travels to Hempfield for a Saturday matinee before closing the season at Gateway on Monday. Penn-Trafford (14-7, 8-6) tunes up for the playoffs with their regular season finale Monday at North Hills.
