Latrobe Evens Record at 1-1 with 35-7 Win at Mount Pleasant

After a season-opening loss at conference powerhouse Penn-Trafford last week, the Latrobe Wildcats headed south on Route 981 for a non-conference matchup with the Mount Pleasant Viking on Friday, September 18. Latrobe found the result more to their liking in week two, as the Class 5A Wildcats beat the Class 3A Vikings 35-7 on a chilly evening at Vikings Stadium.

Latrobe broke the ice with a 64-yard Landan Carns to Tucker Knupp touchdown pass with 5:56 to play in the opening quarter. The PAT kick failed, and Latrobe led 6-0. The only other scoring in the first half came on a 27-yard John McHenry field goal for Latrobe with 5:42 left in the second quarter, and the teams went to the locker rooms with the score 9-0.

Mount Pleasant took the second half kickoff but turned it over to Latrobe on a fumble only 46 seconds into the third quarter. The Wildcats quickly converted the turnover into points 17 seconds later when Dylan Gustafson carried into the end zone from 8 yards out, and McHenry's PAT kick failed, making it 15-0.

Kyle Brewer put the next Latrobe points on the board with his 16-yard touchdown run. Landan Carns came up short on the two-point conversion attempt, and the score stood at 21-0.

Mount Pleasant responded with an Asher O’Connor to Aaron Alakson 68-yard touchdown pass (PAT good) to close it to 21-7 late in the third quarter. But that was as close as it would get as Latrobe closed out the scoring with touchdown runs by Gustafson from 2 yards out and Bobby Fetter from the 3-yard line.

Next up for Latrobe is another non-conference opponent in Upper St Clair, while Mt Pleasant has a conference matchup with their rival from the other direction on Route 981, Southmoreland.
