Latrobe Jumps to Early Lead, But Norwin Bounces Back for 4-2 Win

For a little over 20 minutes, the Latrobe Lady Wildcats could claim something that is about as rare as snow in June; a two goal lead over the Norwin girls soccer team in the Lady Knights' home stadium. But just like June snow, it doesn't last long, and such was soon the case for the Wildcats' lead. Norwin responded with four unanswered goals to claim a 4-2 victory in the 4A Section 3 season opener for both teams on Tuesday, September 15.

The crowd had barely taken their seats before Latrobe got on the scoreboard with a goal by Claire Girard less than two minutes into the game. Just under four minutes later Latrobe's Maddie Delucio dropped a free kick over the head of Knights goalkeeper Liz Waszkiewicz and in front of the crossbar, and the Wildcats were up 2-0. 

But Norwin settled down and began to control the field position battle with their speed and defense. Paloma Swankler took the goose egg off the scoreboard for the Knights with her goal in the 22nd minute of the first half. Latrobe held a 2-1 lead as the teams left the field for halftime. 

The second half belonged to Norwin, beginning with senior Lacey Bernick's game tying goal three minutes into the half. The score remained tied until the midpoint of the half, when a foul inside the box set up Katelyn Kauffman for a penalty kick, which she buried between the post and a left-diving Latrobe goalkeeper Sofia DeCerb. Two minutes later, Kennedy Soliday scored the final goal of the game for the Lady Knights and secured the 4-2 victory. 

Next up for Norwin (1-0-0) is a road trip to Fox Chapel on September 17. while Latrobe (0-1-0) will host Allderdice the same night.
