Latrobe Boys Storm Past Greensburg Salem in 2nd Half for 83-58 Win
It took them better than half the game, but when the Latrobe boys basketball team finally found their groove, they took off like a rocket.
The Wildcats, who had trailed since early in the game, overcame a 3-point halftime deficit, outscoring Greensburg Salem by 22 points in the third quarter to win easily 83-58 on Thursday, December 23, at Greater Latrobe High School.
Early on it was the visiting Golden Lions that looked like they had the upper hand. The Lions put up 21 first quarter points versus 14 for the Wildcats, led by Donivan Waller's 13-point effort which included three 3-pointers.
Latrobe closed the gap in the second quarter with 19 points against 15 for Greensburg Salem, but the Lions still had a 36-33 lead to talk about in the locker room at halftime.
Greensburg Salem got a field goal from Christian Hostetler in the opening minute of the third quarter to take a 38-34 lead, but then the Latrobe juggernaut took over. The Wildcats scored 21 unanswered points before Ryan Burkart stopped the bleeding for the Lions with a field goal, but by then major damage had been done. When the quarter was finally over, Latrobe was up 60-41. led by Landon Butler's 15-point third quarter performance. Latrobe outscored Greensburg Salem 27-5 in the quarter, which saw the Golden Lions shoot 1-of-8 from the foul line.
Fouls were the name of the game fpr both teams in the final quarter. Greensburg Salem turned their free throw misfortunes around with a 7-of-8 showing at the line, while Latrobe went 3-of 16 from the charity stripe as head coach Brad Wetzel went deep into his bench once the game was well in hand. Eight different Wildcats put points on the board in the final quarter in which Latrobe outscored Greensburg Salem 23-17 on the way to a much needed 83-58 victory.
Landon Butler led all scoring with 27 for the game. Tyler Mondock had 14, Max Butler 12, and Chase Sickenberger 11 for Latrobe. Christian Hostetler led the Golden Lions with 16 and Donivan Waller was right behind him with 15.
The win was the first of the season for Latrobe and improved their overall record to 1-6. Greensburg Salem is still searching for their first win at 0-6 on the season. Both teams have several days off before returning to action midweek after Christmas in holiday tournaments.
