Hempfield Boys Open Conference Play with 77-72 Win over Norwin

With the season opening non-conference games and holiday tournaments in the rear view mirror, Hempfield and Norwin met to open their Class 6A Section 3 conference schedule on Tuesday, January 4 at Hempfield's Spartan Fieldhouse. An evenly matched game saw hot shooters on both sides of the court, but it was the host Spartans who prevailed 77-72 in the first of two scheduled meetings between the long-time foes.

A back-and-forth start saw Norwin holding a 17-15 lead after one quarter, despite a 10-point effort by Hempfield's Sean Gordon.

Hempfield battled back into the lead in the second quarter, as Gordon matched his earlier output with 10 more. Norwin's Adam Bilinsky finished the first half with 12, and Ty Stecko had 11, but the Knights trailed 36-32 at the intermission.

Hempfield widened the gap in the third quarter, spreading the ball around while putting up 20 points to 14 for the Knights.

Norwin came roaring back in the fourth as they outscored Hempfield 26-21 over the final minutes, yet the comeback fell short as Hempfield held on for their first conference win of the season.

Hempfield's Sean Gordon led all scoring with 29 for the game, with Joe Fiedor adding 18 and Harrison Sowers 15. The Spartans continued to do much of the damage from behind the arc with 11 three-pointers, as Sowers had 5, Gordon had 4, and Fiedor added 2 more from long range.

Norwin's scoring was led by Adam Bilinsky with 25, Michael Fleming with 22, and Ty Stecko with 14. Norwin's 5 three-pointers were spread among four players.

Neither team went very deep into their bench all night. Hempfield coach Bill Swan used only 7 players and Norwin coach Lance Maha used 6.

Next up for Hempfield (4-5, 1-0) is a road trip to Fox Chapel on 1/7. Norwin (3-4, 0-1) will host Central Catholic on 1/7.
