Penn-Trafford Boys Top Norwin 53-50 to Earn Season Split

Penn-Trafford held off a late fourth quarter rally by Norwin to beat the Knights 53-50 in a Class 6A Section 3 boys basketball game on Friday, February 12, at Norwin High School. The Warriors avenged a 66-59 loss to Norwin on January 19 and split the season series with their long-time rival.

Norwin jumped out to a 15-12 first quarter lead, with Adam Bilinsky scoring 9 for the Knights and Josh Kapcin 7 for the Warriors.

But Penn-Trafford exploded in the second quarter, scoring 23 points to 11 for Norwin, and taking a 35-26 lead into the halftime break. Penn-Trafford scored four 3-pointers in the second quarter, with an 8-point effort by Kapcin leading the way.

Norwin chipped away at Penn-Trafford in the third quarter, closing the score to 44-38 going into the final frame.

The Knights battled back to tie the Warriors at 48-48 when Adam Bilinsky hit a pair of free throws at 1:36 to play. But the Warriors jumped back on top with a Kapcin field goal and a pair of Chase Vecchio free throws before Norwin's Caleb Pryor hit a field goal to make it 52-50 Penn-Trafford with 40.9 left on the clock.

Norwin got the ball back when Penn-Trafford missed on the front of a one-and one, but the Knights missed on two shots in the waning seconds. Penn-Trafford added another point as Kapcin hit the first of a one-and-one, but Norwin couldn't get a shot off in the final seconds, and the Warriors claimed a 53-50 victory as time expired.

Josh Kapcin led the Warriors with 20, and Ben Myers added 13 for the victors. Adam Bilinsky poured in 20 for the Knights, with Jayden Walker good for 12 and Nick Fleming contributing 11. Norwin shot 9-for-10 from the free throw line while Penn-Trafford was 10 out of 15.

Norwin (5-9, 2-7) has a quick turn around with a Saturday afternoon game scheduled at North Allegheny. Next up for Penn-Trafford (8-5, 4-4) is a conference game at Greensburg Salem on 2/16.
