Freeport holds off late comeback attempt by Derry to win 53-43 in WPIAL Class 4A Section 1 Action.

Freeport's Leah Hartman won the tip off against Derry's Sara Bungard to begin their WPIAL Class 4A Section 1 contest at Derry High School in Derry on Friday night February 12, 2021.

It was Derry that scored first when Alanna Meloy hit a field goal giving the home team the early lead.

Meloy added a second field goal shortly after extending the lead to 4-0.

Derry looked like they were pulling away from the Yellow Jackets as they took a 11-7 lead into the second period of play.

Freeport battled back to an 11-11 tie with 5:30 left in the half and then scored 10 unanswered points to take control of the game with 2:00 left in the second period.

Freeport took a 9-point lead into halftime with the score 25-16.

The Trojans allowed the Yellow Jackets to extend their lead in the third period, which ended with Freeport leading Derry 42-27 as the game headed to the final period.

Derry mounted a spirited comeback in the fourth period when they pulled within 5 points of the Yellow Jackets as the score was 44-39 with 2:30 left in game.

However Freeport held off the late comeback by the Trojans and secured a 53-43 win.

Melaina DeZort led the Yellow Jackets with 18 points.

Ava Soilis added 17 and her sister Grace and Leah Hartman both added 8 points in the victory.

Freeport completed the season sweep of Derry with the victory and improved their record to 7-1 overall and in the conference.

Derry's Tiana Moracco led the Trojans with 20 points and Emma Huber added 8 in the loss.

Derry fell to 1-8 overall and in the conference.
