Greensburg Salem Girls Take 42-28 Win in Crosstown Battle with GCC

After numerous delays and game postponements for both schools due to Covid-19, the Greensburg Salem and Greensburg Central Catholic girls basketball teams likely welcomed a friendly non-conference game between neighbors sharing the same 15601 zip code. And so they met on a snowy Tuesday February 2nd at Greensburg Salem with nothing on the line but bragging rights. When the final horn sounded, it was Greensburg Salem who waved the victory flag as they defeated the visiting Lady Centurions of GCC 42-28.

Greensburg Central Catholic was first on the board when Bailey Kuhns scored a field goal two and a half minutes after the opening tip. It was the only lead the Centurions would have the entire game. The Lady Golden Lions quickly tied the score on a field goal, then a 3-pointer by Carissa Caldwell put them in the lead for good at 5-2. The Lions would go on to score 11 in the quarter to only 6 for GCC.

The teams played the second quarter evenly and methodically, with each team scoring 7 points, as Greensburg Salem held onto their 5 point margin and led at halftime 18-13.

The Golden Lions started to pull away from GCC in the third quarter, increasing their lead to 8 points as they led 32-24 going to the fourth quarter.

With the Centurions in foul trouble, eventually putting Greensburg Salem into the double bonus, the Lions put the game away, hitting 6-of-8 from the foul line along with a pair of field goals, outscoring GCC 10-4 as they wound down the clock for the 42-28 win.

Abby and Kaitlyn Mankins shared team-high honors for Greensburg Salem as they each scored 12 points. GCC's Bailey Kuhns led all scorers with 13 points, and teammate Mya Morgan chipped in 8.

Greensburg Salem (3-3, 0-2) travels to Franklin Regional on 2/5 for a Class 5A Section 4 matchup. Greensburg Central Catholic (3-2, 1-1) has a non-conference game at Yough scheduled for 2/5.
