Girls Soccer - Latrobe vs Norwin
Latrobe Girls Soccer Breaks Two-Decade Jinx, Beats Norwin 2-1
Latrobe girls soccer players experienced something that no formers players had done since before the the current players were born. They defeated Norwin. The Wildcats' 2-1 home win at Rossi Field also broke a decades long streak of Norwin not losing a section opener. Norwin's long winning streak over Latrobe dated back at least 25 years.
Freshman Robin Reilly set the tone early for Latrobe with a goal 5 -1/2 minutes into the game. The teams battled back and forth for over 30 minutes before another freshman, Mandy Petruzzi, got behind Norwin goalkeeper Riley Morningstar and put the Cats up 2-0 with just over 3 minutes left in the half.
Norwin got one back in the 11th minute of the second half when Evelyn Moore got around Latrobe keeper Sofia DeCerb and booted it into the twine. But it was as close as the Knights would get as the Lady Wildcats defense held off the Lady Knights to achieve the history making win.
Latrobe (4-0, 1-0) sits at the top of the early-season Class 4A Section 3 standings and will travel to Allderdice Friday afternoon for a section game. Next up for Norwin (1-1, 0-1) is a Friday afternoon section matchup with Fox Chapel at home.
