Panthers Roar as Franklin Regional Wins 2021 WCCA Girls Golf Championship
Franklin Regional and Greensburg Central Catholic each placed four medalists in the top ten, but the Lady Panthers' 279 total bested the Lady Centurions by one stroke to win the the team championship at the 5th annual Westmoreland County Coaches Association Girls Golf Championship held Thursday, September 9, at Champion Lakes Golf Club in Bolivar. Hempfield Area placed third with a score of 208.
Franklin Regional is also home to the 2021 individual champion, Caroline Tragesser.
It has been two years since the WCCA held golf championships, with pandemic restrictions cancelling the girls and boys 2020 tournaments. This is the third year that the WCCA has awarded a team champion trophy, with GCC winning the prior two. The girls play a 9-hole tournament on the front nine at Champion Lakes.
A pair of Franklin Regional golfers led the field with individual low scores of 41. Tie scores are settled via a scorecard playoff, where scores are matched according to the hardest handicap hole, with the senior Tragesser winning out over freshman teammate Ana Qin to claim the gold medal.
Finishing 3,4, and 5 behind Tragesser and Qin were three GCC golfers, Meghan Zambruno at 42 and Izzy Aigner and Ella Zambruno at 44. Franklin Regional, GCC, and Hempfield filled out the rest of the top ten with Hempfield's Raina Jones 6th with 47, Franklin Regional's Ali Boyle 7th with 47, Liv Cana of GCC 8th and Cameron Alexander of Franklin Regional 9th, both with 50, and Milana Yannascoli of Hempfield 10th with 52.
Participating schools were Belle Vernon, Derry Area, Franklin Regional, GCC, Greater Latrobe, Hempfield Area, Kiski Area, Ligonier Valley, Mt. Pleasant, and Southmoreland.
The Westmoreland County boys golf teams will compete in their annual WCCA championship on Friday 9/10 at the Latrobe Elks course. Due to Friday night football, our coverage of the boys tournament will not be posted online until Saturday afternoon.
