Big Play Offense and Tough Defense Propel Greensburg Salem to 34-6 Win over Mount Pleasant
Greensburg Salem combined a big strike offensive assault with a stingy defense to shut down Mount Pleasant 34-6 in a Westmoreland County made non-conference game on Friday, September 10, at Viking Stadium in Mt. Pleasant.
Under colorful skies and in perfect football weather, the host Vikings received the opening kickoff and quickly went three-and-out before punting to the Golden Lions. Greensburg Salem struck quickly on their first possession, capping a two play drive with a 61-yard touchdown strike from Hayden Teska to Cody Rubrecht. Daishaun Alexander split the uprights with the PAT and the Lions led 7-0.
After the Viking offense stalled on their second possession, Greensburg Salem repeated the Teska to Rubrecht connection for 57 yards, with Alexander adding the PAT, and the Lions were up 14-0 at the 1:42 mark of the opening quarter.
Mt Pleasant got their offense in gear on the next possession with an 8-play, 65-yard drive that featured junior Robbie Lapuda diving into the endzone from one yard out. Greensburg Salem senior Billy McChesney blocked Lapuda'a extra point attempt as the Vikings closed the gap to 14-6 early in the second quarter.
But Greensburg Salem quickly got the lead back to a double-digit margin on their next play from scrimmage. This time Teska found Donavin Waller for a 66-yard touchdown pass, with Alexander adding the PAT kick.
Mt. Pleasant stopped a late second quarter Greensburg Salem drive when Tyler Reese intercepted Teska in the red zone.
Greensburg Salem shut the Vikings down while adding a touchdown of their own in each of the remaining quarters. Teska called his own number from two yards away in the third, but Alexander's kick went wide. Teska and Rubrecht connected again through the air in the final quarter, this time from 24 yards. Alexander's PAT boot closed out the scoring as the Goldens Lions claimed a 34-6 win against the Vikings.
Greensburg Salem (2-1) opens Class 4A conference play next week on the road at Knoch. Class 3A Mt Pleasant (2-1) has another non-conference matchup against a higher classification Westmoreland County team as they travel to play 5A Latrobe.
