First Half Slump Dooms Franklin Regional in 55-40 Loss to Woodland Hills 

An abysmal shooting first half put the Franklin Regional girls in a hole that they could not dig out of, as they fell to Woodland Hills 55-40 on Thursday, January 19, at Franklin Regional High School in Murrysville. 

Woodland Hills jumped out to a 12-6 first quarter lead, with Carmen Vasquez accounting for 10 of the Wolverines' points. The Panthers scoring slump continued into the second, as Woodland Hills put up 13 more to the Panthers 5. Woodland Hills held a comfortable 25-11 lead at halftime. 

The Panthers found a spark as the second half opened, and they went on a quick 10-1 run to close the gap to 26-21 with 5:50 on the third quarter clock. But the Wolverines regained control, scoring several quick buckets to take their lead back into double digits 90 seconds later at 32-21. Woodland Hills held a 44-28 lead going into the final quarter. Sarah Penrod had 9 for the Panthers and Hope Hawkins 8 for the Wolverines in the third. 

Franklin Regional outscored the Wolverines 12-11 in the fourth, yet it was much too little, too late. Penrod had another 9 point quarter for Franklin Regional, but Woodland Hills claimed victory with the 55-40 final score. 

Franklin Regional's Sarah Penrod led all scorers with 21 points, including four 3-pointers. Hope Hawkins had 18 and Carmen Vasquez 14 for the Wolverines.  

The Panthers and Wolverines entered the game tied at 4-2 for second place in the Class 5A Section 1 standings.  

Next up for Franklin Regional (5-9, 4-3) is a trip to Plum on 1/23. Woodland Hills (8-9, 5-2) will host Plum on 1/26.
