Milana Yannascoli and Hempfield Area win 2024 WCCA Girls Golf Championship

For the first time since before the pandemic, a new team champion has been crowned at the Westmoreland County Coaches Association Girls Golf Championship. Hempfield Area, led by gold medalist Milana Yannascoli, outscored defending champion Franklin Regional 196-198 for Class 3A top honors under perfect golf weather on Thursday, September 5, at Champion Lakes Golf Resort in Bolivar. Greensburg Central Catholic claimed the Class 2A team trophy with 207. Franklin Regional had won the team title from 2021 to 2023, with Greensburg Central Catholic winning top honors in 2019, before the pandemic canceled the 2020 event.

Yannascoli carded a 4-over-par 41 on the tough par 37 front nine, five strokes clear of defending champion Gianna Johnson of Franklin Regional, who had 46. Greensburg Central Catholic's Kennedy Kelly finished third with a 47, followed by Franklin Regional's Mia Snyder at 48 and GCC's Erica Rodriguez with 49. The remainder of the top 10 were decided by a scorecard match tie-breaker. Athena Neuschwander of Franklin Regional was 6th, Vittoria Scaramucci of Belle Vernon 7th, and and Mads Pervarnikof Hempfield 8th, all with a score of 50. Kat Devito of Hempfield was 9th and Sydney Stark of Belle Vernon 10th, both finishing with 52.

Participating schools were Hempfield Area, Franklin Regional, Greensburg Central Catholic, Mount Pleasant, Belle Vernon Area, Greater Latrobe, Ligonier Valley, Southmoreland, Kiski Area, and Derry Area.

The 2024 WCCA Boys Golf Championship will be contested Thursday, September 12 at Latrobe Elks Golf Cub.
