Girls Lacrosse - Yough vs GCC

Yough girls lacrosse tops GCC 13-12 on Rebecca Ghion buzzer-beater goal. 

Junior Rebecca Ghion scored as the second half clock hit zeroes to give Yough a 13-12 buzzer-beater victory over Greensburg Central Catholic in an exciting girls lacrosse game at Yough's Cougar Mountain Stadium on Monday, April 30. Ghion's goal, her 5th of the game, came right after a stop in play left 2.1 seconds on the clock in a 12-12 tie. It marked a final two minutes that saw Yough take their first lead of the game since leading 1-0 when Hadley Sleith scored her 5th goal of the game with 1:50 remaining to play, breaking an 11-11 tie to give the Lady Cougars a 12-11 lead. But GCC, who lead by as many as 4 late in the first half, wasn't giving up that easy as they answered with a Gabby Guzik goal with 19.9 seconds left in the second half that looked like it could end knotted at 12. However, Yough had just enough time to execute the comeback win when Ghion's goal hit the twine as the horn sounded. 

It was a tale of two halves, as GCC scored eight times in the first half to lead 8-5 at intermission, while Yough's eight goals in the second half was the margin of victory over GCC's four goal second half output. Yough scored in the opening minute of the game but GCC scored the next two to lead 2-1. Yough tied the game at 2 but the Lady Centurions went on a 4-0 run to lead 6-2 before the Lady Cougars finally got back on track. Yough's first goal of the second half a minute into the half got them back to within two at 8-6, and they slowly chipped away to trail by one before scoring three goals to GCC's one in an exciting 179 final seconds of the game.     

Rebecca Ghion and Hadley Sleith shared game-high honors with 5 goals each. Renee Patricio added 2 scores and Ryelee Overly had 1 to round out the Yough scoring. Gabby Guzik and Alyssa Pollak both had 4 goals for GCC, with Chelsey Boyle and Jacinta Jolly each putting 2 in the Lady Centurions scorebook. Krystal Schweinberg got the win as Yough's net minder. Emily Schneider was in goal for GCC.
