Southmoreland shuts out Yough 4-0 in WPIAL Class 2A Boy’s Soccer action

Southmoreland  junior goaltender Matthew Rodriguez held the Yough Cougars scoreless in a Section 3 match at Russ Grimm Stadium in Alverton on Thursday night, Oct 10, 2019.

The Scotties had four different players score on Senior Night in front of the hometown crowd.

Both teams played good defense for the first 20 minutes of the game until Southmoreland freshman midfielder Matthew John scored the first goal at 24:20 of the 1st half. He was able to find the net when he beat Yough  senior goaltender Cameron Pritts who came out of the goal too far on defense.

The Scotties took that 1-0 lead into the intermission.

Southmoreland wasted only seven minutes before increasing their lead to 2-0 when Southmoreland junior midfielder Brendan Moore scored a goal.

Then after 11 minutes of traded possessions, Southmoreland junior midfielder Tyler Dunn added a goal increasing the lead to 3-0.

Fittingly, it was a senior, Noah Kinter, who added the last goal of the evening making the score 4-0 with 2:02 left in the game.

Southmoreland improved to 8-8 on the season and Yough fell to a season record of 3-12.
