Penn-Trafford Remains Undefeated Following 1-0 Win Over Hempfield 

Penn-Trafford and Hempfield played a regulation seven inning baseball game Wednesday, however, it was the first inning that decided the outcome. Solid pitching and good fielding was the order of the day in both dugouts as Penn-Trafford used a pair of singles in the first inning to beat Hempfield 1-0 in a WPIAL Class 6A Section 2 game on the carpet at Seton Hill University.

Penn-Trafford starting pitcher Maclean Maund retired the first three Hempfield batters in order to open the game. Hempfield pitcher Shane Stuchell opened his half of the inning with a pair of groundouts before Anthony Sherwin singled to left field. Sherwin stole second, setting up the game's only run as Luke Fabac lined a single into right field, scoring Sherwin. A fly out to left field ended the inning with the Warriors holding the 1-0 lead.

Penn-Trafford didn't advance a runner to second base for the remainder of the game, as Stuchell gave up only one more single in his 3-hit complete game outing. Hempfield had several opportunities with runners in scoring position but couldn't push a runner past third base. In the second, the Spartans had runners on first and second with two outs when a sharp liner to a diving Warrior third baseman Sherwin ended the threat. A pair of singles to lead off the fifth inning put Hempfield runners on first and second with no outs, but Maund pitched out of the inning with a strikeout, a fly out, and a ground out. In the sixth inning, a single, a walk, and a wild pitch set the Spartans up on second and third with two outs, only to have Maund record the last of his 9 strikeouts to end the half inning. Bobby Kusinsky pitched the seventh for the Warriors, striking out two before a groundout to second base ended the game, giving Kusinsky the save. Maund gave up 4 hits and walked 2 in picking up the win. Stuchell gave up 3 hits, walking only one, in taking the tough loss for the Spartans.    

Penn-Trafford is 2-0 in section play, 9-0 overall. Hempfield is 1-1 in section action, 6-4 overall.
