Mt. Pleasant scores three second half goals to defeat Burrell 3-1 in WPIAL Class 2A Section 2 boys soccer action

Mt. Pleasant and Burrell both played solid defense for the first 40 minutes  of their WPIAL Class 2A Section 2 boys soccer conference game at Mt. Pleasant on Tuesday, Sept. 10, 2019.

Neither team was able to put any points on the board despite plenty of opportunities for each team during the first half. 

Both teams defenses were playing well and they headed to halftime knotted at zero.

It was Burrell who drew first blood when junior midfielder Ian Smola sneaked a rebound past Mt. Pleasant junior goal keeper John Menefee at 34:49 in the second period. The Buccaneers took a 1-0 lead.

Both teams traded possession of the ball several times until a trio of Mt. Pleasant juniors scored three second half goals to decide the tightly contested match.

Viking Junior defender Nathan Kubasky tied the game at the 26:03 mark of the second half when he scored on Burrell sophomore goal keeper Dom Ferra.

Twelve minutes later Mt. Pleasant junior midfielder Lucas Toohey drove the ball past Ferra on a penalty kick and the Vikings took a 2-1 lead over the visiting Buccaneers.

The final goal of the night was scored by Mt. Pleasant junior midfielder Ethan Mates at 6:34 left in regulation, giving the Vikings a two-point lead in the match.

On a night when juniors did all of the scoring on both teams it was only fitting that fellow junior John Menafee earned the win in goal for the Vikings.

Mt. Pleasant improved their record to 2-0-1 in the conference and overall. 

Burrell dropped to 1-2 in the conference and 3-3 overall.
