Greensburg Central Catholic Dominates, Beating Springdale 33-7

With a balanced offensive attack that ate up game clock like candy, and a defense that forced turnovers and kept Springdale off the board until the final minutes of the game, Greensburg Central Catholic turned in a dominating performance in beating the visiting Dynamos 33-7 on Friday, September 27.

GCC took the opening kickoff, and after the teams traded punts, the Centurions mounted a drive that took up most of the first quarter clock, with Zach Kuvinka scoring on a 6-yard run with 54.9 seconds left in the quarter to give GCC a 7-0 lead.

After Springdale failed to get their offense going early in the second quarter, GCC mounted a clock-chewing 94-yard drive that ended with a David Altimore to Joe Blahovek touchdown pass on a 4th-and-goal from the 1 yard line with 1:52 to play in the half.

Springdale turned the ball back to the Centurions on their first play from scrimmage after the kickoff when Brandon Brown intercepted Demitri Fritch on the Springdale 44-yard line. The ensuing Centurions' drive was ended by an interception with 18 seconds to go in the half, and Springdale ran out the clock to end the half with GCC on top 14-0.

GCC tried to catch the Dynamos sleeping with an onside kick to open the second half, but the kick didn't go the required 10 yards and Springdale set up their offense at midfield. Just as it looked like the Dynamos would mount a scoring drive with a steady diet of runs up the middle, GCC's Danny Dlugos turned the tables with a stripped ball touchdown return run of 87 yards. The PAT kick was blocked but the Centurions held a 20-0 lead with 6:43 remaining in the third quarter.

Danny Dlugos scored again, this time on offense, as he carried into the end zone from 15 yards out at 2:26 of the third quarter. The PAT kicked was blocked again, and the score remained 26-0.

The Centurions rested several of their starters for the rest of the game, and the Dynamos finally got onto the board with 1:29 to play on a 30-yard touchdown pass from Fritch to Christian Vokes, making the score 26-7.

The Dynamos then tried an onside kick of their own, which was recovered near midfield by GCC's Zach Dlugos. Zach David took the next play from scrimmage 50 yards for the final Centurions' score, with the PAT making the score 33-7. Springdale mounted another drive but it fell short as Fritch scrambled and broke for the end zone, his dive for the pylon coming up just short as time expired.

The game took only two hours to play, from opening kickoff to final horn.

The win boosts the Centurions' record to 4-1 in the WPIAL Class 1A Eastern Conference standings, with a 5-1 record overall. Springdale drops to 1-2 in the Eastern Conference, 4-2 overall. GCC travels to Mapletown for a non-conference game next week, while Springdale will host Northgate in a non-conference matchup.
